When should your child first visit a dentist?

One of the most common questions we hear from parents at Care & Cure Dental Centre is: "When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?" It's a great question, and the answer might surprise you.

The recommended age for a first dental visit

The Indian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both recommend that a child's first dental visit should happen by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first.

For most children, the first tooth appears between 6 and 10 months of age. This means the ideal time for a first visit is between 6 months and 1 year.

Why so early?

Many parents assume that dental visits can wait until the child has a full set of teeth. But early visits serve several important purposes:

  • Early detection of decay — cavities can develop as soon as teeth appear
  • Assessment of jaw and bite development
  • Guidance on feeding habits, bottle use and pacifier weaning
  • Building familiarity with the dental environment before any treatment is needed
  • Personalised brushing and diet advice for parents

What happens during the first visit?

A first dental visit is gentle and brief. At Care & Cure, Dr. Bhuvanesswari takes a "lap exam" approach for very young children — the child sits on the parent's lap while the dentist gently examines the mouth. There's no drilling, no complex procedures. It's simply a look, a count and a conversation with the parent.

The visit typically includes checking for early signs of decay, examining gum health, assessing how the teeth are coming in and discussing any concerns the parent may have about feeding, teething or oral hygiene.

What if my child is older and hasn't visited yet?

If your child is 2, 3, or even 5 and hasn't had a dental visit yet, there's no need to feel guilty. The best time to start is now. The dentist will assess the current state of your child's oral health and create a plan to address any concerns.

How to prepare for the first visit

Keep it simple and positive. Tell your child you're going to visit a friendly doctor who will count their teeth. Avoid using words like "pain" or "injection." Bring a comfort toy if it helps. And most importantly, stay calm yourself — children pick up on parental anxiety.

At Care & Cure Dental Centre, we understand that the first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of dental health. Our team takes the time to ensure both the child and the parent leave feeling comfortable and well-informed.
